Makro 1.0: The Free, Private Text Expander Is Ready

After months of beta testing and hundreds of improvements, Makro 1.0 is officially here. What started as a simple text expansion extension has grown into the most capable free text expander available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave.

Here is what is in 1.0.

Smart Macros That Adapt to Context

Makro now supports conditional text that changes based on where and when you use it. Write one macro that is formal on work sites and casual everywhere else. Use tab stops to jump between fields after expansion. Set up dropdown prompts that ask you to pick a tone before inserting. Create macro variants - one hotword that expands differently depending on rules you define.

This is the kind of power that enterprise tools charge per-seat for. In Makro, it is free.

AI Rewrite for Everyone

Every Makro user - free tier included - gets 25 cloud AI rewrites per month. Select text on any page, right-click, and choose Smart Rewrite. Pick an action (formal, casual, fix grammar, shorten, expand, or bullets) and the result appears in an inline overlay right where you are working. Accept it, copy it, or retry.

The AI runs on Makro's own Cloudflare infrastructure. Your text is never sent to a third-party AI provider. For complete privacy, switch to Ollama and everything stays on your device.

25+ Dynamic Placeholders

Makro's placeholder system goes far beyond simple date stamps. Insert calculated values with [$CALC:100*0.15]. Auto-increment ticket numbers with [$COUNT:tickets]. Transform text with regex. Fill entire forms by copying multi-line data and using [$FILLFORM]. Position your cursor exactly where you want it with [$CURSOR] or numbered tab stops.

Encrypted Cloud Sync

Pro and Premium subscribers can sync macros across devices with AES-256-GCM encryption. Your macros are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it. Makro's servers store encrypted blobs only - a zero-knowledge architecture where even we cannot read your data. Multi-device conflict resolution handles the case where you edit the same macro on two devices.

Works in Every Text Field

We spent significant time ensuring Makro works reliably in Zendesk, Gmail, Notion, Google Docs, Freshdesk, and every major web-based editor - including tricky ones built on CKEditor and ProseMirror. Whether you are on Chrome or Firefox, expansion just works.

The quick search overlay (Ctrl+Shift+Space) lets you find and insert any macro from any page without opening the popup. The right-click context menu gives you folder-based access, favorites, and your most recently used macros.

Security First

Makro underwent an independent security audit before this release. All findings have been resolved. The extension collects no behavioral data, runs no third-party analytics, and shows no ads. The only telemetry is an anonymous install count (version, platform, locale) and an anonymous weekly active user ping. That is it.

Switching Is Easy

Already using TextExpander, Espanso, aText, AutoHotkey, PhraseExpress, Alfred, Typinator, ProKeys, Text Blaze, Auto Text Expander, or Beeftext? Makro can import your existing snippets directly.

Available in English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.
